Garage Storage Cabinets
Garage storage
cabinets can
make a great addition to any garage which needs to be organized. Most
people use their garages as storage
places and
after a while they do not have enough room to even fit a
car. I know that I have been guilty of that myself and
although I used it as a shop to fix and make different
things, after a while it got really hard to even find
room for that and also stay motivated as I was losing all
of my tools. The best thing to do is treat this area just
like any other room in the house and create a system to
keep everything in the same spot which makes it possible
for you to find them. Since there is only so much room on
the floor, a good solution is to set up a
system which uses the walls and ceiling
to its advantage.
Although
the economy is not doing any well, I wouldn't let the deter me
from trying to get something. With a bit of know how and
searching, I believe that it is still possible finding products
which can help, fit the budget and also look great. Pay a bit
more attention to the specs and details listed, when buying through a website,
since you cannot actually touch the product until it arrives.
Sometimes the size of what you see on the picture is a bit
misleading, but that is due to the way the the pics are taken
and not necessarily the fault of the shop or
manufacturer
.
Some of the
products available are storage cabinets with opening
doors, sliding doors,
see-through
doors, drawers,
wheels, compartments or
shelves. These can be found made up of
numerous components such as wood,
metal, plastic or
steel. The decor of the garage doesn't really
need to be taken into account unless you are planning to go on
TV with it. What I would look for more is the usability and
durability of the piece. After all, the environment is
quite dirty and subject to moisture and not all
tools like being subject to either of the
two.
Also if you are planning on really packing a ton of
things in there, think of the weight that this is going to
amount to. A plastic cabinet might collapse
under the pressure whereas a metal,
wooden or steel one wouldn't
even feel it. If you are going for a plastic one, as these are
a bit cheaper, find one with a metal structure
(skeleton) so that you at least have a chance with it
surviving your storage experiment.
Coleman Garage Storage
Cabinets
Coleman
cabinets are
very well known on the market for being
heavy
duty, durable, scratch and stain
resistant as well as possessing a
powder coat
finish.
Their design is modular and that means that the layout
and way you set them up adjusts to your needs. Unlike
some systems, these do not come in one piece and
can be arranged depending on the needs of the
user.
Depending
on what you are looking for, the company has released products
ranging from a simple base
cabinet that
can be used for setting tools and groceries on to full
workstations and other cabinetry systems. The doors feature a
magnetic door latch which keeps them shut, and come in many
different colors with black or dark grey being the most
popular.
Metal Garage
Storage Cabinets
This type
of a design is usually of commercial
grade, made
out of steel and a bit bigger than some of the regular
designs. Think of the larger pieces that you see in a
mechanic shop either hanging on the wall or sitting on
the floor. Most of the designs come with two doors
opening to the sides and a deep storage
space which allows to fit entire tool
collections in them. If you have kids running around or
just want to keep the expensive tools safely in there,
get the one with a lock so that it cannot be easily
opened. As these are very heavy when filled, it would be
impractical for anyone to take it off the wall to open
later... in case of a robbery that is.
Rubbermaid Garage Storage
Cabinets
Rubbermaid has been making some super
strength organizational
systems... the
company even says that if you own a steel, or wooden set that
can be banged up in a garage, their designs are superior. After
checking out a lot of reviews and examining the types of things
that they made I have to say that the ones made out of
high-density polyethylene really look like tanks. As the
company has been in business for over 70 years, it makes sense
to keep them in mind as well... but the cost will be a bit
higher due to the brand.
Plastic Garage Storage
Cabinets
These could
be considered as a more light duty
alternative to the other materials which make up
such products. Still a very good, and less expensive option for
a garage, just do not expect the type of durability
found in metal or wood. The doors on them open and close quietly
which is a great feature and when choosing one, look for
plastic that is mold
resistant and
that has structural reinforcements
molded-in.
Some models might collapse under the weight without such
supports.
Wood Garage Storage
Cabinets
For the
fans of laminated
wood this
might be a great option as well. Very nice looking and durable,
some of the features are: plywood back and sides,
adjustable
hinges,
handles made out of steel and a
thermofused
finish. The best
models are able to hold up to 200 lbs per shelve and are very
tough. Find out how much assembly is needed before purchase as
these rarely come as complete pieces.
Garage
Storage Cabinets With Doors
Unlike
the cabinets which are open, these come with either
opening or sliding
doors and
are good for keeping things dust and moisture free. The choice is really up to you as
both can be utilized in storage
solutions.
Garage Storage Cabinets
Cheap
In order to
get your garage
storage cheap it is very important to find out
exactly what you need. Just because a brand or certain material
catches your eye, it doesn't mean that there is not a cheaper
alternative. Many of the regular garage owners can do with a
second grade brand and well made plastic storage as it will do
its job and not break the bank.
Look
through the things that you own, and get a system down on paper
as to how you will categorize the pieces and which are being
used more often than others. When researching pay close
attention to the measurements
of the different
models, do not visualize them in your head, instead grab
a ruler and see how big they will be in the real world.
This is a great way to avoid any surprises or problems
upon arrival. Check for the replacement / exchange policy
as well before purchase.
Build Garage Storage
Cabinets
Some place
also sell plans and dyi
blueprints which teach you and show how to build
your own cabinets. Unless you are very technically skilled,
and can estimate whether after the
labor and prices of
materials this makes sense.... opt for an already
made system. It will save you a lot of hassle and headaches as
building this yourself makes things much more
complicated.
Garage Storage Cabinets
Manufacturers
There are
many companies which specialize in building custom cabinets as
well. Some of the most known ones are located in
las
vegas,
kansas
city,
jacksonville
,
houston, and glendale AZ. This might be due to the fact that
labor is cheaper in those places but they are the ones
that most contractors go through. They can be found in
the yellow pages, by calling information or doing a
simple search online.
Many
department stores offer wide selection of garage
storage cabinets, and I always find these a good
starting point when beginning my search. It is a quick and easy
way to recognize the different types, styles and price ranges
so that I can later compare others to. The next step would be
going online, as this is where you are most likely to find a
better deal as online retailers have a smaller overhead, and
offer better deals. The typical prices will range from
$20 for a single shelf unit upwards to $300 for a bigger
cabinet.
If you will need a professional
installation, do consider the price as the final tag
might be in a range of a $1000 or more. When
choosing an installer, make sure that they are
licensed and insured as you
do not want to be responsible for any injuries.
